Avebury

About

Recognised as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape, Avebury is a place not to be missed. Built roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, and now managed by The National Trust, it is the largest stone circle in the world, with two inner circles and a huge henge ditch.

The henge consists of a huge bank and ditch approximately 1.3km in circumference. The stone circle is part of a much larger prehistoric landscape and includes a Neolithic causewayed enclosure, the remains of a timber circle, the largest manmade mound in Europe and many round barrows.

The stones themselves are of a local sarsen stone. Both the stones and the henge are particularly unusual, not just for their size, but also because Avebury is the only stone circle with a village built within it.

Explore this pretty village and you will a find a pub, shops and Avebury Manor and its surrounding gardens. This early sixteenth century, reputedly haunted house contains rooms decorated from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century.

Whilst you are here, why not also visit the Alexander Keiller Museum, which houses one of the most important prehistoric archaeological collections in Britain?
