The Kennard

The Kennard

Type: Bed & Breakfast

Built in 1794 - just 3 years before Jane Austen’s first visit to Bath - by Thomas Baldwin, the City Architect, this lodging house formed part of the new and fashionable Bathwick estate, comprising Great Pulteney Street. It also boasts of being in the “Environs of Laura Place”, the prime location so highly favoured by both Jane and her father, and where Jane chose to accommodate the wealthy Dowager Viscountess Lady Dalrymple and her daughter, in Persuasion: “Lady Dalrymple had taken a house, for three months in Laura Place, and would be living in style”.

Just across the road from The Kennard there is an arch where Laura Chapel once stood, the church frequented by the Austens and referred to in Jane’s letters as “our chapel”.

Today The Kennard has been thoughtfully refurbished to a Town House Hotel with charm and character, while offering every modern comfort. Freshly cooked English or Continental breakfasts are served in the original Georgian kitchen, refurbished as a delightful dining room.

The garden of the Hotel is undergoing a complete restoration to its original Georgian glory. If the beauty of Bath is too much for you, why not come and relax in its verdant shade and learn about Jane Austen’s favourite plants.
