Jane Austen's Bath

Jane Austen set two of her novels in Bath, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and made the city her home from 1801 to 1806.

For Jane Austen fans, there is plenty to explore in Bath. Visit the Jane Austen Centre on Gay Street which celebrates Bath’s most famous resident. The Centre offers a snapshot of life during Regency times and explores how living in Bath affected Jane Austen’s life and writing.  There is also a traditional tea room above the museum - the Regency Tea Rooms - that serves a variety of teas, cakes, lunches and light snacks.

The Jane Austen Centre runs walking tours which show where Jane Austen lived and places that were used in her novels.

A free mp3 audio walking tour can be downloaded from visitbath.co.uk. The tour includes highlights of the city and excerpts from Jane Austen’s novels as well as commentary about her life and writing in Bath.

Every year in September there is a festival that celebrates all things Regency.  The Jane Austen Festival includes walking tours, talks, music, theatre and a Regency Promedade.  For this year's dates and further information see the major festival and events listing page on visitbath.co.uk.

For further information about Jane Austen’s Bath, please see the dedicated Jane Austen section on visitbath.co.uk/janeausten.
