As the chalets begin to go up for the sixth Bath Christmas Market (30th November - 10th December), Bath Tourism Plus, organisers of the event are pleased to announce that this year's programme of entertainment has been finalised, and is set to really add to the festive ambience of the event.
Many local talents have been given the opportunity to promote themselves to the large audience at the market, and some well known favourites are set to return due to popular demand!
The Victorian 'Galloper' carousel is making a come back, and will again be sited in Stall Street, in front of the Roman Baths. Popular with kids - both big and small ones! - the carousel sets off the Christmas lights and brings a feeling of 'Christmas past' to shoppers passing by.
The opening evening of the market, 30th November, coincides with the switch on of the City's Christmas lights from 6.00pm which will take place on the veranda of the Roman Baths, overlooking the market. During that evening, there will be a wealth of entertainment to amuse the crowds - the stilt walking Snow Queen will be there, sprinkling her magic dust, and Santa Claus may even pop by.
The whole duration of the market will be a feast of local talent, and while many of the acts are raising money to fund their budding careers, some are fundraising for more worthy causes. An example is a choir from the Royal High School, who will be at the market raising money for two reasons - to help fund a multi-sports tour to Barbados, and to highlight and raise money for the Sophie Cameron Trust. This is a local charity in aid of encephalitis lethargica, otherwise known as sleeping sickness, which sadly claimed the life of a formal Royal High School pupil this year. The girls will be performing on Tuesday 5th December 5.00pm-5.40pm and 6.20pm - 7.00pm at the central performance area on York Street.
Thursday 7th is your opportunity to get a very unusual gift, when Sensible Pencil, an on the spot caricaturist takes centre stage at the market from 1.00pm - 5.40pm and on Friday 8th December, Captain Barnacle will be entertaining shoppers throughout the market. He is a 'swashbuckling pirate hero, with many a yarn and lots of surprises in his sea chest (A-haaarr!)' who will be amazing children and amusing adults from 5.00pm-8.00pm.
There are many more performers than is possible to mention, including musicians, vocal groups, magicians and even a 'musical saw extraordinaire'! To see a full programme of entertainers at Bath Christmas Market, see the entertainment section of the website: www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk.
Don't forget that the Park & Ride service, offered by Bath & North East Somerset Council is being extended to cover the hours of the market. So help tackle congestion in Bath and save yourself some parking money - use Park & Ride.
