Learn to Cook in Bath

If you are seeking a short break with a difference and are keen to hone your culinary skills then a trip to Bath could be the answer. Some of Bath's finest hotels such as the Royal Crescent, the Queensberry and the Bath Priory Hotel have teamed up with the Bertinet Kitchen, Bath's new purpose-built cookery school. The school offers a range of relaxed but informative classes for every level of skill. There is a detailed bread course geared around Richard Bertinet's book of bread "Dough" which won the IACP 2006 cookbook of the year. Richard's Gallic charm and the delightful surroundings of a converted mews house right in the centre of the Bath's antique quarter make this a memorable experience.

Guest appearances include celebrity chefs such as Giorgio Locatelli, reputed to be one of the best Italian chefs in the UK, who is chef patron on Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli. On 29th September 2006 he will be showcasing dishes from his new book "Everything I know about Italian Cookery".

Mitch Tonks set up FishWorks in Green Street, Bath in 1996 as a specialist fishmonger with a small restaurant serving the freshest seafood, simply cooked and presented. The third element, a cookery school soon followed as his enthusiasm for fish was so infectious that his customers wanted to share his expertise. The FishWorks formula is a winning one and the company now has ten restaurants and in 2005 it floated on AIM on the London Stock Market.

The FishWorks Cookery School offer a mix of demonstration and hands on cooking with helpful tips and techniques on how to prepare and cook fish and shellfish. The focus is on the ingredients with recipes that are easy to follow in the home. Tasting is an important part of the day with an opportunity for a sit down meal accompanied by specially selected wines. The Bath School is always over-subscribed so it is worth booking ahead.

Her Vegetarian Cookery School specializes in day courses, full of spice including Spanish Tapas, Southern Indian Thali, Thai and Vietnamese and Moroccan. The classes are for just ten people and are very popular. The courses cover up to ten dishes and finish with a 3 course lunch with organic wine at the end of the session.
