Railway Rarities Go Under The Hammer

Railway memorabilia collectors from all over the country are expected to attend an auction at Bitton Station on Saturday.

Organised for the Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust by their museum curator Paul Baulch, the auction is expected to raise much needed cash for the charity, with 10% of the hammer price going to Trust funds.

The star item this year is a very rare Great Western Railway cast iron sign which was made especially to warn the Badminton Hunt not to cross the railway line - there are only two known examples in existence. This makes it a very desirable artefact and should sell for well over £1,000.

Other items on offer are many and varied, both in size and value and extend from tickets and luggage labels to watches, lamps, posters, station signs and locomotive number plates.

Railwayana auctions are popular all over the country and previous events at Bitton Station have attracted a great deal of interest.

The auction begins at 12 noon with the hammer wielded by auctioneer Michael Wyatt. Lots are on view from 9.30 on Saturday morning. Entry is free and interested buyers and members of the public are all welcome to attend.
