Oscar-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn visits Bath for the first time in this new production of Tennessee Williams’s autobiographical first play which the critics praised for both its high comedy and superb ensemble acting when it opened at Manchester’s legendary Royal Exchange Theatre earlier this year.

Brenda Blethyn reprises her role as Amanda Wingfield, the matriarch of an endearingly eccentric family. This faded Southern belle, who long ago lost both her fortune and her husband, clings to the memories of a genteel past when she once entertained seventeen gentlemen callers in a single afternoon. It becomes her ambition in life to see wallflower daughter, Laura, receive a suitor and she and son, Tom, a would-be writer, arrange a visit. But when the reluctant beau arrives, their lives are changed forever.

Tennessee Williams’s lyrical masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the landmark plays in American drama.

Brenda Blethyn has been nominated for Oscars for both Little Voice and Secrets & Lies and her numerous other award-winning films include Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Saving Grace. On television her many credits include Belonging, Outside Edge and Chance in a Million. She is joined in The Glass Menagerie by the original cast of Emma Hamilton, Mark Arends and Andrew Langtree.
