Dates:
26/11/2010 to 19/12/2010
Let your imagination soar with Flights of Fancy at the American Museum this Christmas. Festive delights have flown into the museum or been carried on the wind, adorning hallways in bold sweeps of ruby red and glittering gold. Brightly coloured beaded birds, butterflies and winged beasties sparkle on the branches of the magnificent Central Hall tree.
Discover how flight affected the lives of early Americans as you tour our period rooms. George Washington’s visit to the launch of the first hot air balloon in America has led one young spectator to try and make his own balloons. Another young woman is making a bird mask from brightly coloured feathers that she has collected; she hopes to wear it to the costume ball later that night.
Kites, with letters to Santa tied on their tails, have blown off course. Can you spot where they have landed in the period rooms, so we can send them on the wind to the North Pole?
Follow the whirling windmill path to the Christmas shops, which will be selling fanciful Christmas gifts and decorations.
