Type: Exhibition
Dates:
13/03/2010 to 31/10/2010
The museum’s collection of 240 American quilts is acclaimed as the finest of its type in Europe and the equal of many premier collections in the United States. Ranging from the 18th to early 20th centuries, these exuberant works of art and craft are visually bold, technically assured and often proudly patriotic. To celebrate the publication of Classic Quilts from the American Museum in Britain (Scala Publishers) the museum will be showcasing some of its greatest quilt treasures in this special exhibition for 2010.
Sumptuously coloured, but fragile, silk pieces are being prepared for Classic American Quilts. A woollen mourning quilt, rarely displayed because of its great weight, is also being made ready with supports. The historical context of each quilt is showcased as much as the magnificent needlework. Indeed, the exhibition promises to be a kaleidoscope of colour and stitched stories, which will appeal both to quilters and anyone, of either sex, interested in American history.
This is a much anticipated exhibition, and will showcase some of the museum’s absolutely stunning American quilts – many rarely seen, due to their great size or fragility.
