The story of the stone that built Bath and the people who worked with it. Ancient stones, modern carvings, archive photographs, oral history, fossils and finds from the Combe Down stone mines never displayed before. At the Building of Bath Collection, the place to discover how Georgian Bath was built.
Family Workshops All family events are free with normal admission unless otherwise
stated. Children must be accompanied at all times.
Festival of British Archaeology 2009 – 18 July – 2 August
The Building of Bath Collection will open every day for the Festival of British Archaeology
(18 July – 2nd Aug) with free entry for Young Archaeologists!
Streets of Stone – Saturday 18 July, 11am-3.30pm
Drop in and join local sculptor Laurence Tindall to have a go at carving your own Bath stone house!
Buildings Archaeology – Wednesday 22 July, 6pm
Jerry Sampson reveals the archaeology of buildings including Bath Abbey. Free for Young
Archaeologists and accompanying adults. Unaccompanied adults, £3.
Uncovering Historic Paint – Tuesday 28 July, 1.30-4.30pm
Drop in to learn some 18th century painting techniques.
Hidden Graffiti – Wednesday 29th July, 1.30-4.30pm
Drop in to explore hidden historical graffiti from the Combe Down Stone Mines.
Touching the Past – Thursday 30th July, 11am-12.30pm
Drop in for the opportunity to learn about and hold tools from the past.
Petrified! – Tuesday 27 October and Thursday 29 October, 11.00am-12.30pm
Join Sheila Stansfield, the Barefoot Storyteller, as she reveals the secrets of magical creatures whose gaze can turn you to stone!
