The Holburne Museum’s annual Picnic in the Park is now in its fifth year and promises to be as lively and creative as ever. As the Museum is currently closed for its development project of restoration and extension the event will take place in Sydney Gardens, just behind the Museum and home to the Gardener’s Lodge where the Museum’s education team is based.
In addition to free creative workshops offering, for example hat and mask-making, this year there will also be a Masquerade performance in beautiful costumes inspired by the history of the Gardens and led by Suited and Booted, Bath’s award-winning production company.
With the support of the Museum’s Network the Holburne has been able to offer an enthusiastic group of teenagers from Bath the chance to spend a week being history detectives, interpreting their discoveries and creating a performance to share at the Bank Holiday event. The theme of masquerade has been chosen because of the Gardens’ significance as an eighteenth-century pleasure garden.
This year’s Picnic in the Park will also show case the work produced during a three week project supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and The Norie Trust, which explores the heritage of Sydney Gardens using the themes of music, film and fashion.
The Holburne invites everyone to bring a picnic and join the Museum for an afternoon of creative activities in Bath’s oldest park.
