The award-winning London and Broadway production of Driving Miss Daisy visits the Theatre Royal Bath from Tuesday 30th October to Saturday 3rd November 2012 as part of a new, strictly limited UK tour starring Gwen Taylor (Coronation Street, Heartbeat, Barbara) and Don Warrington (Rising Damp, Manchild, New Street Law, Casualty). Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize winning play - which became an Oscar-winning hit film - tells the charming, poignant and utterly compelling tale of an unlikely, long-lasting friendship.
Having broken records on Broadway and played to sold-out audiences in London’s West End, starring Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones, David Esbjornson’s award-winning production of this heart-warming and humorous play has dazzled audiences and critics alike. Driving Miss Daisy recently won the 2012 Whatsonstage Award for Best Play Revival voted for by over 10,000 theatregoers.
When elderly southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan, a widowed, Jewish woman living in mid-century Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son Boolie hires kind-hearted Hoke Coleburn, an African American man, to serve as her chauffeur. Whilst the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound, life-altering friendship blossoms as the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either would ever have expected.
