For many of us, a key component of lockdown life has been walking – from initial daily exercise walks to exploring the outdoors as guidelines relaxed last year. As lockdown eases again, the habit of a daily walk may be fading away, so how can you keep up that habit, or develop your newfound love of walking?

To ensure outdoor exploration remains a mainstay as we move to the new normal, the team at Bathscape have put together their guide to making walking a lifelong habit in Bath…

You can find plenty of resources on to help you plan your walks in Bath and beyond online. Bathscape has collected a range of inspiring places to visit, highlighting what a fantastic location Bath is to explore, from the city centre to its surrounding countryside, as well as further afield around Chew Valley, Somer Valley and Keynsham.

Take Part in a Walking Festival

If you prefer to walk with a group of like-minded people, you can join in one of the city’s local walking festivals. Slightly different in format to previous years, Bathscape 2020 featured a mainly virtual programme of downloadable walks, videos and activities. The annual Bathscape Walking Festival will be back this September, hopefully with more in-person walks pencilled in!

Challenge Yourself to the Walk of Life

You can set yourself a challenge to increase the amount you walk and keep motivated to walk further by joining the Walk of Life on 18th September, in aid of the Royal United Hospital's Forever Friends charity. While this is advance notice, and the event doesn't take place until later in the year, you can use spring and summer to build up gradually, whether you choose to tackle their marathon or ten-mile distances along the picturesque Kennet and Avon Canal.

Join a Local Walking Group

Alternatively, you can join a local walking group, such as Ramblers (there are local groups throughout the region) and Bath Rambling Club. Most activities are currently suspended, but now is a good time to get in touch with the groups and find out more in advance of lockdown easing.

If you need a bit of additional support, or prefer to walk shorter distances, then keep an eye on Walking for Health, for when the groups are up and running again. There are normally walks in Twerton, central Bath and Timsbury.
