Each festive season brings something new to look out for at Bath Christmas Market, and 2019, the Market’s nineteenth year, is no different…
Entertainment for Everyone
Setting the Stage
Keeping things lively, there will be a rolling schedule of entertainment and music at the Market. Keep your ears open for the sounds of festive tunes and carols from the City of Bath Brass Band and Midsomer Norton Brass Band, plus the Grenville and Bath Rock Choirs, who will be bringing the seasonal songs.
Infectious and dynamic rhythms will also come courtesy of the famous Jamma De Samba band and their Brazilian drumming, and new for 2019, New Bond Street will play host to a stage – the perfect platform for some magical music. Keep a look out too for some festive friends roaming the Market – from an Ice Queen to some cheeky elves – making sure everyone’s getting into the Christmas spirit!
Blow a Bauble
In addition to their chalet in Abbey Churchyard, where you can browse their wonderful selection of glassware, learn from the experts at Bath Aqua Glass by creating your very own Christmas bauble at the Market this year. With multiple time slots over nine different days, book tickets and head to New Bond Street to craft a beautiful decoration for the tree.
There’ll be photo opportunities around every corner at the Market, what with the streets getting their annual festive makeover, but to add to the atmosphere, keep an eye out for the sparkling Snow Globe and Insta-friendly photo spot, perfect for capturing Christmas memories.
Play Some Tunes
Last year’s street piano, decorated by pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, will be making a comeback this year, with children from Fosse Way School in Radstock getting involved. Housed in its very own chalet, give it a tinkle and have Christmas singsong.
Say Hello to New Stallholders
This year at the Market there are a range of new stallholders to keep an eye out for. For homeware, look out for Shakspeare Glass making their debut at the Market and bringing with them their exquisite handmade range inspired by the West Country, and to add some sparkle to your home, visit Prezzi’s chalet for beautiful Turkish mosaic lights and ceramics.
For a seriously sweet treat, pick up some Langleys Rocky Road – luxury Belgian chocolate combined with delicious ingredients – or stop by Scout & Sage’s chalet to sample some of their inventive Christmas gins.
One of the Market’s charms is the ability to pick up unique gifts you won’t find anywhere else. Sarah Jane of Sarah Jane Handmade will bring her distinctive pottery, from decorations to tealights, to Bath, and try to resist Studio Scrase’s enchanting illustrations – on a range of prints and greetings cards – many of which are inspired by the city.
Tuck into Festive Food
Brand-new for 2019, a dedicated vegan and vegetarian food chalet will be stationed on York Street. Serving up the ultimate street food, The Vegan Spice will bring their popular vegan katsu curry to the Market, a warming dish of sticky rice and their Bangkok patty smothered in katsu sauce, all topped with pickled ginger, coriander and sesame seeds – delicious!
Afterwards, get your chocolate fix at Chock Shop’s new chalet, on Milsom Street. The ultimate in homemade brownies, look out for six different flavours, from Oreo to their Christmas Baileys special – perfect to enjoy on-the-go with hot chocolate sauce.
Be sure to bring a flask or reusable coffee mug along to the Market, or purchase a Huskup at the Visitor Information Centre, as caterers at the Market are offering a discount on drinks served in reusable cups.
If you came to the Market last year, you'll have spotted the charity chalet – a chance for a different local charity each day to occupy the space for free and raise valuable funds for their individual causes. This year there'll be two charity chalets, one on Milsom Street and another on York Street, letting 36 organisations in total boost awareness of the work they each do across Bath and beyond. From Dorothy House Hospice Care to FoodCycle Bath, stop by to say hello to the different charities and dig deep this Christmas!
