About
Sourdough has surged in popularity in recent years, and it's easy to see why—there's nothing quite like a freshly-baked sourdough loaf. Although the use of a sourdough 'starter' might seem a bit intimidating, this Sourdough Baking course is designed to demystify the process and cover everything needed to get started. Participants will also take home a ready-made sourdough starter to use.
Skills Covered:
Making and maintaining a sourdough starter
Country loaf
Danish rye bread
Sourdough pizza
Baguettes
The crucial component of sourdough is the starter, a symbiotic culture of yeasts that provides the carbon dioxide needed for the bread to rise and gives it that distinctive sour flavor. The course begins with everything participants need to know about creating a starter, caring for it, and 'feeding' it so that it lasts.
Following demonstrations, participants will practice mixing and kneading a country loaf, Denmark's famous rye bread, a sourdough pizza base, and a baguette. Understanding how the dough should look, feel, and smell at each stage of the process is as important as following the recipe, so the course focuses on developing this understanding, with ample opportunity for questions.
At the end of the day, participants will go home with a pot of sourdough starter, a selection of their own delicious creations, and a course booklet that includes all the recipes and guidance notes. The day also includes a delicious two-course lunch with the other attendees.
