About

Rob Randall has had a lifelong interest in botany, especially in habitat development and succession and is currently President of Bath Natural History Society.

Sand dunes are one of the very few truly natural vegetation types in the British Isles but they are by no means stable communities and are continually changing.

Rob will illustrate some of the ways they develop, the plants involved and what they contribute to the process. Biodiversity of dune systems can be extraordinarily rich but once they are no longer affected by the tides, salt spray and other extreme conditions they slowly lose their special character and can develop into relatively species poor scrub or bramble thickets.
