The Bald Soprano at The Mission Theatre

32 Corn Street
The Bald Soprano at The Mission Theatre

Tickets £12 (£10 concs) Available from Bath Box Office.

By the 1960s, The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco had already been recognized as a modern classic and an important seminal work in the Theatre of the Absurd. This is a hilarious and creepy interpretation of one of the most famous plays in the genre. Shadows and lights will dance around the superficiality of human nature, hiding and revealing the inconsistent personalities of the characters.

The Smiths are a traditional couple from London who have invited another couple, the Martinezes, over for a visit. They are joined later by the Smiths’ maid, Mary, and the local Fire Chief, who is also Mary’s lover. The two families engage in meaningless banter, telling stories and relating nonsensical poems.

Like many plays in the Theatre of the Absurd genre the underlying theme of The Bald Soprano is not immediately apparent, but with this production we’ll follow the main interpretation, underlining the futility of meaningful communication in modern society, all the artificial aspects of our behaviours and the superficiality of modern relationships.
