Introduction to Tapestry Weaving
Caron Penney
£50 (with £4 materials charge payable directly to tutor on the day. (Includes entry to Tapestry: Here and Now)

In this exciting and lively one day tapestry weaving workshop with master weaver Caron Penney, students will investigate basic weaving techniques suitable for beginners including hatching and colour blending - the foundations to tapestry. By the end of the workshop students will have completed one sample. The group will work on pre-warped frames provided by the tutor, a stock of wools will be available and all equipment can be borrowed. Students should bring a notebook and pen.

Caron Penney is an artist-weaver who has been making tapestry for over twenty years both as a master weaver for artists including Tracey Emin, Gillian Ayres and Martin Creed, and also independently creating work for exhibition. She is a member of the Contemporary Applied Arts and the 62 Group of Textile Artists.

A rare opportunity to learn and enjoy a tapestry workshop in the UK from Scottish born, now Australia-based, tapestry weaver Valerie Kirk, whose stunning work features in Tapestry: Here & Now. Learn the techniques of knotting, wrapping, cut and loop pile, weaving on additional warps to create textured tapestry. Experiment with a variety of materials, colour and surface quality.

Valerie Kirk studied at Edinburgh College of Art, Goldsmiths College, University of London and Wollongong University, Australia. She has exhibited extensively and worked as a tapestry weaver at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, on community tapestry projects and residencies.

Please bring:

Small pair of scissors, tapestry frame measuring approx. 40x60cm (minimum size 30x40cm), bobbins if you have them (some can be borrowed or bought from the tutor at a cost of £5 per wooden bobbin, and £10 per brass bobbin), any yarns you may have – wool, sisal, cotton, jute etc – although the tutor will also provide a variety. You can bring a G-clamp to secure your frame to a table (otherwise it will rest in your lap).
