Drawing on his own research and field work in marine acoustics, Dr Philippe Blondel will present the challenges faced by Arctic marine environments, from climate change to human impacts, including melting glaciers, shrinking ice cover, increasing shipping and declining biodiversity.

But what happens in the Arctic does not stay just in the Arctic: weather changes there also affect lower latitudes, from "Arctic blasts" in the UK to changes in monsoon patterns. Changes to international shipping in the Arctic Ocean are associated with the recent geopolitical changes.

Ultimately, is it still possible to avoid a "Tragedy of the Commons" around the polar regions?

Dr Philippe Blondel is ​senior lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Bath.An expert in remote sensing, his research is primarily concerned with underwater acoustics and studies of the marine environment; he has worked in all oceans except the Antarctic.
