Panto Season is upon us… oh yes it is! Emma Frayling from Visit Bath reviews Cinderella at Theatre Royal Bath.

As a huge theatre fan, it’s wonderful to see productions back on the stage, curtains raised and audiences once again safely experiencing all the joy a trip to the theatre brings. Theatre Royal Bath in the heart of the city was built in 1805 and is one of the oldest working theatres in the country. The theatre is easily accessible and is surrounded by many restaurants and bars in Sawclose and Kingsmead Square just around the corner, to enjoy pre-theatre food and drink.

This was the first time I’d been to see Bath’s pantomime and I had high expectations – lots of family fun and frivolity, sparkling costumes, great special effects and music to get me in the festive spirit! And I was not disappointed!

Dani Harmer, star of Tracey Beaker and BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, as Fairy Godmother and Bath favourite Jon Monie as Buttons, lead the cast in this magical pantomime. Cinderella is played by Ella Jay and Josh Rose plays Prince Charming. Stars of the show for me however (aside from the adorable miniature ponies) were Duncan Burt and Nic Gibney who play The Ugly Sisters Harmony Hard-Up and Melody Hard-Up. Their flamboyant and hilarious costumes along with their great comic timing kept me laughing all the way through.

As with any pantomime there was lots of audience participation and plenty of cheeky jokes for the adults to enjoy! I don’t need to tell you the story - you know it well and the glittering finale gave a wonderful ending to a 5* show. From pre-schoolers to grown-ups of all ages, Cinderella is the perfect festive treat for everyone to enjoy!

Do purchase a copy of the programme as well – it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen full of colourful caricature drawings, puzzles and games to keep children entertained.

Cinderella runs until 9th January 2022 and is produced by Martin Dodd for UK Productions in association with Theatre Royal Bath. The Theatre Royal is running Charities Week and is collecting for Bath Cats and Dogs Home, The Royal United Hospital Bath, Great Western Air Ambulance and Acting For Others.

Gift vouchers are available for the Theatre Royal Bath, Ustinov Studio and Egg Theatre. A full programme of events and performances is scheduled for 2022 – vouchers would make a great gift idea.
