Visitors walking through one of the show caves at Wookey Hole Caves

About

Wookey Hole Caves is one of the UK’s largest show cave systems, lying deep beneath the Mendip Hills. It is home to the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole and offers a magical and historic day out for explorers of all ages. Located near both Bristol and Bath, Wookey Hole Caves make a great day trip. In 2026, brand-new cave projections have been introduced, making the cave experience truly spectacular.

Indoor and outdoor attractions - lots of fun whatever the weather!

When you visit Wookey Hole, you’ll not only enjoy the caves – the attraction is also home to a historic mill and beautiful valley, where there is plenty to do whatever the weather.

Outdoors, you’ll find our animatronic dinosaurs and pirate adventure golf, and in the historic mill you will find a vintage penny arcade and paper-making museum, alongside one of the largest soft play areas in Somerset. Put your glasses on to enjoy a fun film in the 4D cinema! At weekends and during Somerset school holidays, you can also experience the Wookey Hole Circus. With several shows per day, performances change regularly throughout the year, so be sure to check the website to see what’s on during your visit.

The story of Wookey Hole

New immersive cave experience for 2026

Wookey Hole Caves have created a brand-new immersive experience, combining projection mapping, sound and the caves themselves. This showcases the story of the Witch of Wookey Hole, millions of years of geology, and the spirit of exploration beneath the Mendip Hills.

Forming part of the main tour, this £250,000 investment introduces a series of large-scale projections within three cave chambers.

What you need to know:

  • Please wear sensible shoes, as the cave floors can be uneven and wet in places.
  • Buggies cannot be taken through the caves.
  • Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on-site, except for guide dogs.
  • The caves are not currently wheelchair accessible.

Wookey Uncovered - Exclusive Tour & Tasting Experience

A brand-new way to enjoy Wookey Hole. Enjoy a guided two-hour deep dive into the world-famous caves, folklore, people and papermaking industry that shaped this extraordinary place, as part of a small group tour. Finish with cave-aged cheddar and local cider tasting. Information and booking here.

Visit Dinosaur Valley

Step back in time and come face-to-face with mighty, life-sized animatronic dinosaurs in the thrilling Dinosaur Valley. This Jurassic adventure lets families wander through a prehistoric landscape filled with moving, roaring beasts – perfect for dino fans young and old. With fun facts, photo opportunities and a few surprises around the corner, the dinosaur experience adds an exciting twist to your Wookey Hole day out.

Be amazed at the Wookey Hole Circus

One of the highlights of any trip to Wookey Hole is the circus. There is a 400-seat theatre on site, with productions showing every weekend and during Somerset school holidays.

Wookey Hole is owned by the Cottle family. When Gerry Cottle bought Wookey Hole in 2003, he established a permanent circus school, which has launched the careers of some of the UK’s best circus performers. With shows changing throughout the year, there’s always something fresh and exciting to see.

Big events at Wookey Hole

Wookey Hole is the true home of Halloween. Throughout October, the attraction is transformed by a full Halloween takeover, where the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole brings a spellbinding atmosphere to every corner of the site.

As the seasons turn, Wookey Hole becomes one of the region’s most enchanting festive destinations, renowned for its much-loved Winter Wonderland. In November and December, a magical Christmas transformation takes place, wrapping the valley in lights, wonder and festive charm.

In 2026, an all-new Christmas experience will be unveiled. Step into an enchanted forest, journey through a captivating 4D train ride, and arrive at Wookey’s very own North Pole, where families can meet Santa himself. Every child will also have the joy of choosing a special gift from Santa’s toy shop, creating memories to treasure forever.

Even the caves are touched by the magic of the season, illuminated with beautiful Christmas lights that bring this ancient landscape to life in a truly unforgettable way.

Food & Drink

The on-site cafés serve a selection of homemade dishes, snacks, sandwiches and drinks. Opening times vary throughout the year.

There is also a dedicated ice cream parlour on-site, offering over 25 flavours (including vegan and gluten-free options) from local producer Marshfield. It is open daily during school holidays.

Wild Wookey*

For the more adventurous thrill-seekers, Wild Wookey is a multi-award-winning caving experience designed for those with an active lifestyle who enjoy action, confined spaces, heights and climbing. There’s even a zipline out of the caves at the end.
