The core of The Newt is Georgian, with limestone buildings the colour of burnt honey, the seat of the Hobhouse family for more than two centuries. Hadspen and the Farmyard nestle quietly amongst orchards, lakes and woodland that reflect the love lavished upon them over the past 300 years.

The main house was built in the 17th century, then remodelled in Georgian times. Capturing the essence of a Georgian family home, its restrained, classical beauty is offset by playful design; while the original working Stable Yard has been transformed into sophisticated accommodation, retaining characteristics harking back to its equestrian past. Sip tea in the Library, play croquet on the lawn or enjoy a game of badminton in Old Knobbly.

Just beyond the cyder orchards, half a mile from Hadspen as the crow flies, this former dairy farm is a place to spread out and lean back, cheek-to-rosy-cheek with grazing livestock and sheltering oaks. Original farm buildings, with a delightfully golden patina, are home to rooms, a pool, bar, snug and all-day kitchen. Complimentary drinks are available at the Garner Bar, while bikes and buggies provide ample opportunity for pootling over to the gardens and spa at Hadspen.

Relax and unwind in the spa with its indoor-outdoor pool, steam room, sauna and treatment rooms. Reconnect in the Medieval Herb garden, sit for a manicure, get some added stress relief through couples’ mud therapy, or enjoy a proper washdown in the hammam. If you are looking for a bit more action, take a stretch in the Gym while watching the gardeners tending to vegetables for the dinner plate.

The Botanical Rooms

Savour elegant, modern British dishes in the luxurious surroundings of the house. Evolving seasonal menus showcase estate-reared and grown spoils, day boat fish and fleeting ingredients foraged from the hedgerows and woodland. Non-members and non-hotel residents are welcome for lunch and dinner with an advance booking.

Farmyard Kitchen

Experience creative, seasonal plates made for sharing at the heart of our former dairy at the Farmyard. Alive with wood-fired cooking from the open kitchen, tuck into hearty fare prepared with the finest estate ingredients. Lunch & Dinner are available to non-members when booked in advance.

The Station Café at The Creamery

Beyond the estate parameters, The Creamery at Castle Cary station offers up hearty British classics using food from the farm, served simply and generously. Drop in for a quick bite before your train journey, or enjoy a leisurely brunch, all-day Sunday lunch, supper or quintessential afternoon tea aboard a Pullman carriage. Step aboard The Maid of Somerset at The Creamery (a short pootle down the road from the main estate) for a first-class afternoon tea celebrating Somerset’s finest flavours in bygone British Pullman style. The Station Café is located a 10-minute drive from The Newt estate, at Castle Cary Station and is open to the public, no membership is required. Parking is available on site.
