About

Step Back in Time and Light Up Your Imagination

From 22nd April – 2nd June (including May Half Term: 24th May – 1st June)

This spring, something truly prehistoric is coming to life beneath the Mendip Hills.

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure as Cheddar Gorge & Caves unveils Ancient Animal Odyssey – a magical illuminated trail deep within the awe-inspiring chambers of Gough's Cave.

Wander through the shadows and marvel at glowing lanterns of ancient beasts and dinosaurs, brought to life in dazzling colour with background light, music and sounds bringing the scenes to life.

It's a breathtaking underground spectacle for all ages – from curious kids to lifelong explorers!

Meet the magnificent creatures that once ruled the Earth millions of years ago and learn lots of fun facts – even be surprised to learn which ones still walk among us today! It's a journey through time, perfect for family days out and nostalgic trips for the young-at-heart.

Extra May Half Term Fun:
24th May-1st June: Young explorers can join our fun May half term trail. Their mission is to find each of the illuminated prehistoric creatures as they journey around the cave taking in fun facts about the animals along the way. Everyone who completes the task receives an Ancient Animal Odyssey-themed reward badge which they can choose to colour in themselves or even design their own!

And that's just the beginning! Entry to Ancient Animal Odyssey is included with a day ticket, giving you access to six incredible attractions:

Gough's Cave – home of glittering stalactites and the legendary Cheddar Man, Britain's oldest complete skeleton.

Yeo's Journey in Cox's Cave – a stunning new multimedia experience telling the story of how water shaped these ancient caves.

The Museum of Prehistory – discover how our ancestors lived, hunted and thrived.

Beyond The View - find out more about the local history, wildlife and plants in our 270 degree panaromic cinema experience.

Jacob's Ladder & The Lookout Tower – climb 274 steps for panoramic views of the gorge and the sweeping Mendip landscape.

The Cliff-Top Walk – soak up the fresh air and ancient history with every step.

Whether you're bringing the grandchildren, your own inner child, or the whole family along, this is a perfect day out to stir the imagination and reconnect with nature's raw beauty and mystery.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, so no one misses out on the adventure!
