About

Everyone has an amazing camera in their pockets - they just need to learn how to use them properly.

The ethos of Jet Black Squares (JBS) is that photography should be available to everyone, not just those who can afford a ‘big’ camera. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, with JBS you’ll learn much more about what your smartphone camera can do. Sessions also span the generations and so make a great family activity (suitable for ages 10 and over).

Whether you want to take better holiday photos, need to take better content for your social media, or just get into photography as a hobby, JBS can provide you with the skills to make full use of your smartphone camera, as well as some tips and tricks to get those creative shots and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

JBS is a mix between a tour guide and a photography guide where we show you how to release the full potential of your phone to get great photos of your area. JBS has guides all over the UK, Ireland, France and even as far away as New Zealand.

The JBS guide for Bristol and Bath is Lee Smith. Lee has been using his smartphone for photography since 2019 and combines two of his main passions of walking and photography in and around the beautiful cities of Bristol and Bath.

He currently runs smartphone photography group safaris at Bristol Harbourside (including the area around Arnolfini, Millenium Square, Canons Marsh, M Shed and The Matthew), Bristol Marina and Boatyard (covering the area around the marina, SS Great Britain and Underfall Yard), and Bath (covering the area around the Abbey, Abbey Green, Pulteney Bridge and Parade Gardens).

Lee also offers bespoke group, family, 1:1 or team building safaris in or around Bristol or Bath where sessions can be tailored to meet your needs. These sessions also make for great gift experiences for friends and family so there’s also information on the website about how you can buy gift vouchers which are valid for 12 months from purchase. Vouchers can be used in Bristol or Bath, or at any of our other JBS locations. As well as learning how to take great photos, you’ll also learn how to edit them using a powerful free app.

JBS also has a sister company, JBS Creative Workshops CIC. This is a not-for-profit company providing community smartphone photography workshops to include sign language sessions, social prescribing, low level mental health activities. This now enables JBS to bring photography to a wider, inclusive audience.

Accessibility

  • Free admission for dedicated assistants / carers - On our booking form, we ask people if they require wheelchair access to take part in a safari. We also offer a complimentary place on the safari to carers. Also, JBS Community Workshops CIC is a not for profit company that runs alongside Jet Black Squares, allowing us to run smartphone photography and videography workshops for low income communities, sign language sessions, social prescribing (for low level mental health), etc. Through grants and funding, we aim to deliver workshops to members of the community from underrepresented groups, allowing us to help build a community of people who have discovered a love of photography.
