About
For over 30 years, Bath Mozartfest has built an enviable reputation for artistic excellence in chamber and orchestral music. At its annual festival each November, it presents the finest classical music performed by world-renowned artists amidst the splendid surroundings of Bath and its historic buildings.
Held at locations across Bath, Bath Mozartfest was created in 1991, thanks to a generous bequest by Mrs Mary Purnell, in memory of her late son Mark who adored the music of Mozart and the city of Bath.
2025 marks the 35th anniversary of Bath Mozartfest, and will also be the final festival programmed by the peerless Amelia Freedman, CBE, FRAM, the festival's much-acclaimed Artistic Director for over thirty years, who sadly passed away this July.
Freedman had an extraordinary gift for creative programming that was appealing as well as broadening musical horizons. She was also an outstanding champion of new music, and by the end of the Nash’s celebrated 60th anniversary season at London's Wigmore Hall from 2024-25, the ensemble had premièred more than 330 pieces from 25 composers.
Freedman also received many international awards for her extraordinary service to music. Awarded an MBE, then CBE, she was appointed Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite and presented with a medal for services to Czech music. Last October she was granted Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Previous recipients of this award include such esteemed figures as Liszt, Brahms and Stephen Sondheim.
This year's anniversary edition of Bath Mozartfest sees a wealth of new talent, with the Consone Quartet, Kristian Bezuidenhout, the Carducci String Quartet and Castalian String Quartet all making their inaugural Mozartfest performances. They will be joined by seasoned Mozartfest performers including the Leonore Piano Trio, Cédric Tiberghien, Jennifer Pike, The Nash Ensemble, Konstantin Krimmel, Simon Crawford-Phillips, and Philip Moore.
Bath Mozartfest has long championed youthful talent setting out on international careers, and is delighted to include a Saturday morning concert featuring BBC Radio 3 New Generation artists and alumni.
