The concert opens with Ethel Smyth's Overture to her 1904 opera The Wreckers, followed by the highly attractive and unjustly neglected flute concerto by Leibermann – a contemporary American composer, it's a surprisingly romantic work making considerable demands on the soloist. The concert closes with Sibelius' masterpiece, his 5th Symphony, arguably his finest symphonic achievement.
