American Museum & Gardens

Located on the outskirts of town, find the best day out in Bath with breath-taking views, fascinating museum collections, stunning gardens, shop, children’s play area and the new American Garden Deli.

The Museum’s home is a Grade I listed Georgian estate with gardens designed by famous US landscape architects Oehme van Sweden, an arboretum and sweeping parkland. The contemporary New American Garden is a tapestry of American prairie planting, with swathes of ornamental grasses and perennials, roses and thousands of daffodils and alliums. The Mount Vernon Garden takes its inspiration from George Washington’s estate in Virginia, where produce is now grown for the Deli. Located in the Cotswolds AONB, there are spectacular views across the Limpley Stoke valley.

Visit the Museum, which features American arts and heritage, and experience special new exhibitions in the Gallery every year. The Museum cares for over 12,000 objects, including collections of quilts, folk art and maps, which are recognised as some of the most significant in Europe.

There is a seasonal programme of exciting events for all to enjoy, including talks, family fun, wellbeing mornings, outdoor theatre, live music and much more, as well as a range of beautiful spaces to hire for private and business events.

2023 Exhibitions:

22 July – 31 December: Brick America: An Adventure in LEGO® Bricks

Group visits, group tours and audio-descriptive tours are available. Please see our website for more information about visiting and accessibility.

The American Museum & Gardens is an independent charity. All your purchases on site enable the organisation to continue to offer cultural days out with special exhibitions and events for the community, as well as space to roam and learning workshops for schools. It also helps us to care for the Museum’s collections, as well as the wildlife that thrives within the estate – for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.

From 24 July 2023, visitors will be able to enjoy the American Museum & Gardens anywhere, anytime with free arts and culture app Bloomberg Connects. The free digital guide offers a fascinating new way to explore the American Museum & Gardens' world-class collections – whether you’re visiting in-person or virtually from anywhere in the world.

Dogs on leads are welcome in the gardens, parkland, and the cafe. Assistance dogs are able to go into the museum and exhibition gallery.
