About
Discover the joy of movement, craft and invention at American Museum and Gardens this summer.
This vibrant exhibition celebrates the art of automata – playful, intricate mechanical sculptures brought to life by hand. Explore a world of animated models, toys and whimsical characters.
Featuring 25 vibrant and witty mechanical sculptures, brought to life at the push of a button or the turn of a handle, the exhibition draws on the spectacle and storytelling of the circus. From hand-cranked delights to surprising interactive moments, each piece reveals the creativity and craftsmanship behind these mesmerising moving artworks.
Visitors are encouraged to engage directly with the displays, discovering the humour, ingenuity and artistry that make every automaton unique.
Alongside the exhibition, families can enjoy a dedicated creative play area, offering hands-on opportunities to experiment, build and be inspired, alongside chilling out in the big top.
4 July Party
The exhibition opens on 4 July with a Summer Party at the American Museum & Gardens, commemorating Independence Day as part of the Museum’s America 250 programme, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Visitors can explore the new exhibition and summer gardens while enjoying live music, lawn games, children’s circus activities, and American-inspired food and drink.
The opening weekend also features a series of ticketed evening concerts (3–5 July), celebrating American culture with a special focus on jazz.
