About
As the new owners, the Hartham Park team approaches their first summer at Hartham Park with excitement, introducing their inaugural Hartham Park Estate event – The Hartham Summer Festival – a fun family event.
The festival blends the best of a summer fayre, a village fete, and the British summer classic, Wimbledon – imagine champagne, strawberries and cream, and a weekend of fun and games in The Upper Field and The Ballroom.
The events team is fine-tuning the programme of activities.
Kids can follow the Hartham treasure trail, practice their circus skills, win prizes, and have the best fun! Meanwhile, adults can enjoy the Stické competition, watch Wimbledon from The Ballroom, eat, drink, and enjoy live music, knowing the little ones are entertained.
Stay tuned on social media. #summerathartham
What is Stické?
Stické Tennis is a cross between lawn tennis, real tennis, and rackets, played in an enclosed court smaller than that of real tennis, using a standard lawn racquet and soft balls. The court's floor and walls were made of 9-foot square wooden artillery targets, resulting in court dimensions of 27 feet by 81 feet.
Stické was invented by the Royal Artillery in the 1870s, providing good exercise without "the heavy outlay incidental to the construction of a rackets court." The game expanded from the Army into specially built covered courts on country house estates.
Today, Stické is played by a limited number of enthusiasts, with only three playable courts remaining worldwide. Two of these are in the UK: one at Knightshayes Court in Devon and the other at Hartham Park in Corsham. The third court, used for badminton, is in the Viceregal Lodge complex in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India.
Built in 1904, the Stické Tennis Court at Hartham Park is listed at grade II* and was first listed on 1st August 1986, with the most recent amendment on 24th July 2008.
