Looking for ways to entertain the kids this summer? Take a trip back to ancient times and explore the magical Roman Baths with the whole family...
The Baths are an ancient Roman bathing complex, brimming with millions of litres of warm mineral rich waters and 2,000 years worth of history. The endless hot mineral water could fill your bathtub in just eight seconds!
Gather your family and journey back in time as you walk the ancient cobbled pavements around the steaming Great Bath as the Romans once did. You will also have the chance to meet costumed characters who will tell you tales of Roman times and give you special insight into the original use for this grand bathing and socialising complex.
The Roman Baths are made up of many different rooms and chambers, so don’t miss exploring the remains of the swimming pool, steam rooms, plunge pool and changing rooms. Next, you can delve into the fascinating museum. There are many Roman artefacts on display, from coins to combs and even skeleton remains. Watch projections of Roman men and women and learn how these citizens would have gone about their daily lives in Aquae Sulis (Bath’s Roman name).
As you navigate the Baths, adults can opt for a special audio guide narrated by the witty Bill Bryson, while children will be given their own audio guide narrated by Michael Rosen. The children’s guide tells the inside stories of Belator, a Celtic boy, Apulia, a slave girl and a fortune-telling priest.
Keep your eye out for Roman curse tablets. One man believed his gloves had been stolen, wrote down a curse on the thief and threw it into the Baths. You can even throw your own coins into the circular bath to make wishes (or curses!)
The Roman Baths also often extend their opening times in the summer – great for taking the family on a torchlit exploration!
