About
Corsham Court, though originally an Elizabethan Mansion, was bought in 1745 to display the art collection of Sir Paul Methuen, an important Georgian diplomat and connoisseur.
The house, still owned by the Methuen family, was enlarged by Capability Brown creating the Picture Gallery and principal State Rooms, which can still be seen in their authentic state today. The collection features masters from Fra Filippo Lippi to Van Dyck and fine furniture by Robert Adam and Chippendale.
The park and gardens were laid out by Brown and later Repton, with large lawns and fine specimen trees surrounding the mansion. The 25 acres of gardens with arboretum feature an interesting 18th century Bath House, as well as a formal Lily Pond and Rose gardens. The oriental plane tree on the North Lawn is acknowledged as the largest spreading tree in Britain.
Mature magnolias and spring bulbs frame the lawns beautifully in the early year, moving through to rich herbaceous borders and flowering trees later in the season. The autumn brings striking maple tones and late colour in the Rose Garden.
