About

Reel Life Monsters, in the spirit of sharing horror films that contain LGBT+ subtext, presents a double bill of A Field in England (2013) and Ravenous (1999), with a talk on both features by Lucian Stephenson, and art by Monty and Danny Leigh.

A Field in England
An iconic folk horror film, directed by Ben Wheatley (Kill List, The Meg 2), focussing on a deserter (Reece Shearsmith) from the 17th century English Civil War who crosses a hedgerow and finds himself, and the men who befriend him, put to work by a charismatic alchemist in search of 'treasure'. The group of men undergo a series of strange and unsettling trials and transformations as they continue their journey into the field that they now find themselves trapped in.

Ravenous
Now in its 25th year, directed by the late, great Antonia Bird (Priest, Face), tells the tale of a camp of military misfits in the 18th century Sierra Nevadas. When they encounter a lost man (Robert Carlyle) who claims to be an innocent, troubled priest, they get a little more than they bargained for. Each film is notable for its unique cinematic style, gorgeous and grubby costumes, casts chock full of character actors, and unexpected scores, and RLM felt that they would make a perfect double bill for their first film night.

Between A Field in England and Ravenous, there will also be a talk by noted chaotic wizard, artistic menace, and fenland enthusiast Lucian M. Stephenson that will focus on the LGBT+ cultural significance of both films (among other interesting and potentially sordid things).

There will also be some brilliant art prints for sale before, after, and during the event, by the wonderful Danny and Monty Leigh. This event is supported and partially funded by the BFI's Fan Audience Network (FAN) Exhibition Fund, and is also supported very kindly by the lovely people at FilmBath.
