About
September brings us a strong contender for gig of the year. If you missed Benjin in January 2024, don't make that mistake twice.
Benjin is a storyteller in the truest sense—a multi-instrumentalist who weaves together guitar, cello, harp, clarinet, vocals, nyckelharpa, and field recordings into something entirely his own. Over two decades of touring and recording with experimental ensembles has led to solo work that's both deeply rooted and utterly original.
Drawing from a lifetime spent working the East Coast and Thames Estuary, his compositions blend traditional folk forms with free-form jazz improvisations, minimalist classical passages, and rich sound collages. His music has found homes on BBC Radio 6 and Radio 3, and in galleries including TATE and the Serpentine. He was principal musician at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 2022/23.
This summer sees the release of two new solo albums: 'Vol X: The Last Days of Sail'—songs, instrumentals, and guitar miniatures—and 'Vol XI: Partita II Palestine', a radical reimagining of Bach's most famous solo violin sonata played on the nyckelharpa.
An evening of rare artistry in our beautiful Jacobean room.
