About

Fukuoka, located in the south of Japan, is home to a variety of nationally recognised crafts and agricultural traditions – from ceramics and textiles to tea and incense.

From February, MEAA will be showing a selection of objects and textiles from the region. Alongside the display, they’ll be hosting a series of tea-related talks and events with Comins Tea, to deepen the understanding and appreciation of tea, tradition, and making from this region.

The Tea and Crafts of Fukuoka, 5 March, 6:30pm

Comins Tea will discuss their project with Fukuoka Prefecture, exploring the rituals and crafts surrounding tea in the region. Hear from Michelle about Comins' partnership with Fukuoka and the tea makers and craftspeople they met there. The crafts and techniques they use have been passed down for generations but remain a very much alive art. Learn more about these incredible skills and the beautiful objects created from them with this online talk. Pay What You Can: £5, £2, Free. Tickets

The Making of Fukuoka Teas with Comins Tea, 16 March, 11am

Come along to spend the morning exploring different preparation methods for tea from Fukuoka, Japan. Michelle and Rob from Comins will take you through the many delicious ways that you can make tea from this prefecture. With insights into the project Comins have undertaken with the Fukuoka prefecture, the people who grow the tea, and makers of tea sets and implements, this workshop will be an in-depth, intimate tea experience. The different types of tea will include sparkling tea, tea on the rocks, Yame Gyokuro with ponzu and salt, and how to make your own top-quality matcha at home. This workshop is perfect for anyone who has perfected their morning cuppa and wants to explore new ways to enjoy their tea! Tickets £45 public, or £40 MEAA Friends & Volunteers, or Student and BBFA. Book tickets

The team from Comins will explain where each tea comes from, what gives them their distinctive flavours, and how best to enjoy them. For this event, there will be a limited supply of Comins' tea stocked in the Museum shop. Pop in to taste the different teas and then grab a bag of your favourite top-quality tea to enjoy at home! Free with Museum Admission. Book tickets
