About

Emily Brooks Millar's work is a blend of mixed media, primarily using acrylics, oils, and crayons. The child-like feel within her pieces allows for a sense of creepiness and exploration that invites viewers into a space where they can freely share their thoughts.

Emily's work begins with extensive writing and research in her sketchbook, with the text guiding the visual creation that follows. Her creative process is rooted in bright, bold colours, both approachable and translatable.

Morality is the thread which runs through all of Emily's work. Having grown up in a Catholic family and experienced a near-death incident in her early 20s, she constantly grapples with questions of right and wrong, and why we hold certain beliefs. This theme of morality is universal and serves as a gateway for people to learn about each other. Within this exhibition, I'm a Perfect 10, she delves into the satirical and exaggerated aspects of wellness culture, exploring the facades we create, the existential questions we face, and our ultimate responsibility for self-improvement. The characters—The Bear, The Cat, The Egg, The Frog, and The Crimes of the Little Girl—each represent different aspects of this journey, with the latter symbolising the path we all walk in confronting these challenges.
