About
'A voice like no other… will shift the way you see the family and community into something operatic, strange and profound.' – Lena Dunham
Mr B's Emporium is thrilled to welcome Madeline Cash for the highly anticipated release of her debut novel, Lost Lambs, a funny and compassionate new literary novel that turns dysfunction into an art form.
You may recall them banging on about the sheer brilliance of Lost Lambs already, as their booksellers Emma and Liv devoured an early copy and were both so in awe that they knew they had to book this event! Emma says: 'It's the kind of novel that's so bananas you couldn't possibly guess what will happen next – think Jonathan Franzen meets Miranda July, by way of Jeffrey Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides. And don't be fooled by the cute little lamb on the cover! It's truly a reading experience like no other.'
About the book:
The Flynns are not alright.
It's been disastrous since Bud and Catherine opened up their marriage, and none of the Flynns can remember the last time a meal was cooked, a load of laundry done, or a social code abided by.
Their daughters spiral in their own chaotic orbits: Abigail, the eldest, is dating a man in his twenties nicknamed War Crime Wes; Louise, the middle child, maintains a secret correspondence with an online terrorist; the brilliant youngest, Harper, is being sent to wilderness reform camp due to her insistence that someone – or something – is monitoring the town's citizens.
Casting a shadow across their lives, and their small coastal town, is Paul Alabaster, a nefarious local billionaire. Rumours of corruption circulate, but no one dares dig too deep. No one except Harper, whose obsession with Alabaster's machinations sends the family hurtling into a criminal conspiracy – one that may just, finally, bring them closer together.
Rippling with humour, warmth and style, Lost Lambs offers a stunning portrait of the perverse pleasures and perils of our most intimate reality: our family.
'With a big surge of energy, Lost Lambs splits the nucleus of the American family — look into the flash and you'll see teen terrorists, smoking hot handywomen, and the most suicidal suburban dad this side of John Cheever. Madeline Cash likes to get dark, but fortunately the dark is where her writing glows.' – Tony Tulathimutte, author of Rejection.
About the author: Madeline Cash is the founder of Forever Magazine and the author of the story collection Earth Angel. Her fiction has appeared in Granta, The Baffler, The Sewanee Review, The Drift, and Bomb, among other publications. Lost Lambs is her debut novel.
