About

Hidden Gallery will host a collection of original, monochrome works of art by a range of modern and contemporary artists. The collection will feature a selection of hand-signed and rare prints by Picasso, Matisse, Miró, Dalí, Mondrian, Hockney, Haring and Long. Spanning the last century, these limited-edition works on paper will celebrate everything that can be achieved with just two tones.

A monochrome palette can be used by artists to explore formal concerns, mood or to emphasise a particular composition. "Mondrian famously reduced the elements of painting down to their most essential elements - colour, line and form" said Amy Hampshire, Senior Manager at Hidden Gallery. "Our collection includes a screenprint of one of his most influential, abstract compositions, 'Fox Trot A'. The artwork presents an extreme example of his philosophy, featuring only three black lines on a white background. Crucially, this simple composition offers a perfect example of how in the absence of colour, elements such as structure and composition come to the fore."

Highlights include unique animation cells by Haring, created in collaboration with Sesame Street, and limited-edition lithographs pulled from Picasso's sketchbook. The artworks on display demonstrate the conceptual and technical genius of the artists who limited themselves to only two fundamental colours.

The artworks, which are available to buy, will be exhibited at the gallery located at 14a Margaret's Buildings, just a stone's throw away from Bath's illustrious Royal Crescent. Alongside the exhibition Hidden will show hand-signed works by many artists including Warhol, Emin, Riley, Chagall, Lichtenstein and more.
