About

Join Bath Astronomers at the start of British Science Week and explore the magnificent view of the celestial vault from the gardens at the American Museum, by the Bath skyline.

This is your chance to discover something new, ask questions, or share your passion for the stars in an amazing, big-valley-sky experience.

With the skies in transition from winter to spring, you'll be shown it all by expert star guides from Bath Astronomers. Mars and Jupiter will stand guard either side of the waxing gibbous Moon. Dropping your eyes south and you'll see the detail of Orion the Hunter and find out all about its brightest stars and its nebulae.

Your guides will be setting up powerful telescopes to get close-up views of the planets, the Galilean moons and the Great Nebula in Orion. Feel the photons of light that have travelled 1,350 years since the leaving that nebula before touching your eye. As well as stargazing, a mobile planetarium show is being laid on for you to experience the wonders of the Universe without having to become an astronaut!

The stargazing is weather dependent and if conditions are not suitable, stargazing will be virtual in the mobile planetarium and a separate talk on space and amateur astronomy given.
