About
Renowned botanical artist Deborah Lambkin offers a captivating exploration of the life and legacy of Mary Delany (1700–1788), whose extraordinary botanical collages remain a source of inspiration more than two centuries later.
In the final two decades of her life, Mary Delany created nearly 1,000 intricate works known as her "paper mosaiks"—meticulously cut and layered paper compositions that captured the botanical precision and beauty of live plants. These collages are celebrated for their scientific accuracy, delicate detail, and artistic innovation.
Through the lens of a modern botanical illustrator, Lambkin will examine the techniques, materials, and methods believed to have been employed by Delany, offering fresh insight into her artistry. The talk will include a closer look at selected collages, revealing the astonishing craftsmanship and enduring appeal of one of the Georgian era’s most innovative artists.
Tea and cakes will be served following the talk, including vegan and gluten-free options.
This event is presented in association with No.1 Royal Crescent and its exhibition The Botanical World of Mary Delany, on view from 15 March to 15 June 2025.
