About
The chance discovery of the ship in the centre of Newport led to a major excavation project in 2002/3 to uncover and subsequently to remove the well preserved hull timbers, which have since been freeze dried, treated and preserved with the help of The Mary Rose Trust, York Archaeological Trust and others.
The remains have been examined, recorded in considerable detail and put on display with a 3D printed 1:10 scale model in the Ship Centre. Its remarkable state of preservation in the River Usk mud has enabled experts in Iberia to identify the actual woodland from which the original timbers were harvested and the year they were felled in the 15th century.
Bob Evans is a retired Chair of the Friends of the Newport Ship and will talk about its discovery and conservation, what we know about its construction and life as a fifteenth century merchantman, and what archaeology can tell us about its history and the men who sailed her. He will also be able to tell us about current plans to reconstruct the vessel and display her to the public.
This is a BACAS (Bath & Counties Archaeological Society) talk. Tickets are £4 for BACAS members, £5 for visitors – please pay on the door.
