Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein

About

In 1816, Mary Shelley wrote much of the world’s first science fiction novel, Frankenstein, while living in Bath.

Extending over four atmospheric floors, Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein is an award winning, immersive multi-sensory visitor attraction charting Shelley’s unconventional life and the lasting legacy of her infamous creation.

Bursting with unusual artefacts, ominous soundtracks, bespoke smells and special effects, they also present an 8ft animatronic creature, authentically reproduced for the first time exactly as Mary Shelley described.

The House also features two rooms dedicated to Frankenstein in popular culture, a small screening room, a Frankenstein-themed Escape Room, and, for braver visitors, the option of a thrilling horror walkthrough experience in the basement.

Victor's Lair Escape Room

The clock is ticking for you to unlock the mysteries of an unhinged mind and, more critically, your way out to freedom! This puzzle-based game suitable for groups and families with older children. Tickets for Victor's Lair Escape Room are separate to the main House attraction, but you will be able to explore the award-winning, multi-sensory museum afterwards, including the option to enter the horrifying walkthrough experience in the basement.

The Shallows Escape Room

Rumours of a hideous conspiracy linked to unethical human research, deep within the dank basement shallows, are proving reliably credible. You’ve gained unauthorised access to The Shallows only to discover the rumours are a great deal worse than ever imagined. Who is the shadowy world order, what is their ultimate goal?

The Body In A Suitcase Challenge

Do you have what it takes to solve a gruesome mystery? An ominous suitcase thought to contain a number of body parts and personal effects has been discovered at Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein, you have just 45 minutes to solve the riddle of The Body in a Suitcase and identify who lies within and why. This new puzzle-based challenge is suitable for groups of up to 6 people, tickets are separate to the main House attraction.

Accessibility Information

Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein is situated in 37 Gay Street, a Grade II listed townhouse spread over four split-level floors. The main entrance has three steps, with no lift or ramp. There is level access from the main entrance to the ticket office and gift shop. There are steps from the main entrance to the basement, ground floor toilets, fire exit to the rear of the building, as well as the first, second, third and fourth floors.

The fire alarm has flashing lights and all staff have disability awareness training, with some also having BSL and Next Generation Text training.

Some parts of the venue have low lighting and foreboding audio and visual effects, so parents should use good judgement as to whether the attraction will be suitable for their children. The basement walk-through experience is unsuitable for those with asthma, photo-sensitivity or epilepsy, claustrophobia and heart conditions, and may also be unsuitable for those with a nervous disposition.

While Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein has made every possible permitted intervention to maximise physical access, regrettably due to the historic layout and nature of the property, the attraction is currently unable to accept buggies, prams and wheelchairs.

The attraction offers complimentary Day Tickets for essential carers assisting someone with accessibility needs with a general admission ticket.
