Affordable Luxury

Francis Hotel Bath

A mass of eighteenth-century townhouses (seven to be precise) located on one of Bath’s architectural masterpieces, Queen Square, The Francis has the feel of a boutique hotel despite its chain connections. Interiors riff on Regency style, with fun contemporary twists. Bedrooms are individually designed – go for a feature room if you want a four poster and views. For meals, Moroccan/Mediterranean/French-styled café restaurant Boho Marché overlooks Queen Square and has an alfresco terrace.

The Bird, Bath

Run by seasoned hoteliers (who also have countryside mansion Homewood in their brood), this joyful boutique hotel fills a four-storey Victorian villa with vivacious artworks, snazzy furnishings, whimsical charm and avian inspiration. Bodacious bedrooms wear theatrical touches with swagger, many have wide-reaching views, one has room for a family, another an al fresco hot tub.

Dine inside at the restaurant or gaze out over Bath from the outdoor terrace. With free parking and big attractions a short stroll away, this place will have you feeling happy as a lark.

Classic seventeenth-century frontage hides 13 fabulously furnished, boldly wallpapered bedrooms and a coffee lounge. There’s also a rather delightful courtyard hot tub – available for private one hour time slots, plus fluffy robe, slippers and champagne (if you want to splash out).

Breakfast is brilliant and included with all bookings, and the hotel is pooch-friendly too.

Bedrooms come with spa-inspired bathrooms, and there’s a separate private townhouse on adjacent Pierrepont Street, which is perfect for a small gathering. The Elder restaurant on site celebrates British dining with a strong ‘field to fork’ philosophy.
